How To Keep Teeth And Braces In Tip-Top Shape This Summer
Summer is a favorite season for many of our patients. It is a time to let loose, enjoy the longer days and nights with family and friends, travel to favorite destinations, and not have to worry as much about rules and regulations… unless we are speaking about orthodontic care. As carefree as the summer can be, patients who are receiving orthodontic treatment need to be mindful of their oral health this summer. Treating your mouth properly can ensure that your treatment stays on target and orthodontic emergencies are avoided. Continue reading to learn our suggestions on how to keep your braces intact this summer.
Eat Smart This Summer
There are a number of summertime foods that are delicious but not best to be consumed while wearing braces. For example, corn on the cob is notorious for destroying braces. We suggest cutting the corn off the cob and eating with a fork until your braces are removed. If you are traveling on an airplane, remember that chewing gum is not recommended. To help with ear discomfort, we suggest eating a small snack or drinking extra water.
Don’t Forget a Mouthguard
Summer is a big time for travel sports and sports camps. It is important to remember that a mouthguard is recommended to keep your orthodontic hardware and your teeth safe.
Prepare a Travel Kit
If you are planning a vacation this summer, it is best to pack an orthodontic travel kit. This contains anything and everything that you might need to care for your braces while traveling. We suggest packing the normal oral care items such as toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, and mouthwash, but also orthodontic wax, dental picks, a handheld mirror, and an over-the-counter pain reliever. Also, be sure to have plenty of extra materials such as rubber bands on hand that you might need for your braces. It is always better to overpack than underpack in case an emergency should arise.
Don’t Skip Appointments
We know that summer is a busy time; however, we don’t want our patients to delay or skip planned appointments. Delaying appointments prolongs your treatment. Appointments are also a time that we inspect all of the hardware to make sure it is working properly.
