Why Age 7 Is the Perfect Time for an Orthodontic Checkup

Most people associate braces with teenagers, so it might come as a surprise when your child’s dentist suggests seeing an orthodontist around age 7. But this early evaluation plays a big role in setting your child up for a healthy, properly aligned smile.

At The Best Braces in Southfield, MI, we believe early care leads to easier treatment—and sometimes even helps kids avoid braces. Whether your child ends up needing orthodontic treatment now, later, or not at all, that first visit gives us a valuable head start.

Why an Early Evaluation Matters

>Around age 7, most children have a mix of baby and adult teeth. That makes it the ideal time for an orthodontist to evaluate how their jaw is developing and whether permanent teeth are likely to come in properly. We call this “interceptive” care because we’re looking for early signs of potential problems before they become more complex.

Even if your child’s smile looks okay to you, there may be subtle issues developing beneath the surface—things like bite alignment, jaw size discrepancies, or overcrowding.

What We Look For

During an early orthodontic visit, we examine how your child’s teeth fit together and whether their bite functions correctly. We’re also watching for signs of:

  • Overbite, underbite, or crossbite
  • Crowding or spacing issues
  • Early loss of baby teeth
  • Thumb sucking that may affect bite alignment
  • Speech issues or difficulty chewing

In many cases, we won’t recommend immediate treatment. Instead, we may suggest monitoring your child’s growth and development with periodic check-ins.

Benefits of Seeing an Orthodontist Early

The biggest benefit of early evaluation is the chance to catch issues before they require more involved treatment. Early care can:

  • Create space for incoming permanent teeth
  • Reduce the need for tooth extractions later
  • Shorten the time spent in braces as a teen
  • Lower the risk of damage to front teeth during sports or falls
  • Give you peace of mind, knowing what to expect as your child grows

Let’s Start with a Simple Visit

There’s no pressure—and no commitment—to start treatment right away. We simply want to give you the information and support to make the best decision for your child’s future smile. If your child is around age 7 or your child's dentist has referred them for an early orthodontic evaluation, call our office located in Southfield, MI to schedule an appointment.
