Protect Your Braces This Halloween
October has arrived, which means Halloween is just a few weeks away. We know that many of our patients will be celebrating throughout the month. While Halloween is a fun and spooky holiday, we find it frightful to think of the damage that candy can do to your orthodontic hardware. Here are some alternatives to eating all the candy collected this Halloween:
Halloween Candy Alternatives
Navigating Halloween candy while wearing braces or other orthodontic hardware can be a bit challenging. It is extremely important to remember to stay away from chewy candy such as taffy-like items, caramel, and fruit snacks. Chocolate candy is the best option when wearing orthodontic hardware. Another idea that is getting more popular is limiting or avoiding Halloween candy altogether. Here are some popular alternatives to consider:
Candy Trade-In
A candy trade-in is when all of the candy collected from trick or treating is put together and traded for a different item or experience. Popular trade-ins include a toy or a fun family outing. Similarly, you might have children leave their Halloween candy for the Switch Witch or Candy Fairy. This is similar to the Tooth Fairy, where the candy is left and replaced with an item.
Candy Withdrawal
Eating candy and sweets in moderation is extremely important, especially if you wear braces. Another fun idea is a candy bank where your child has to make withdrawals of their candy. You can be as creative as you want with this idea. Some parents like to have their children read or do chores to earn candy from their stash.
Donate Remaining Candy
Many organizations are looking for candy donations after Halloween. These include groups that send candy to troops overseas and to homeless shelters. You can also donate candy to your local police station, firehouse, and hospital for the staff to enjoy.
