Tips For A Great Summer With Orthodontic Treatment

We are thrilled that June is starting and the official start of summer is around the corner. If you are currently receiving orthodontic treatment, it may take a little extra preparation this summer to ensure your treatment isn’t impacted. Problems can easily arise if you do not care for your hardware and teeth as you should. We want to share some helpful tips to ensure your treatment continues as planned. Read on to learn more.

Summer Orthodontic Tips

Following these tips will help prevent problems with your orthodontic treatment:

Pack the Right Tools for Travel
Summer is a popular time for travel. If you have a trip planned and you are currently receiving orthodontic treatment, be sure to pack all the essentials you will need. This is particularly important if you wear clear aligners. If you need to change your trays while away and do not have the trays you need, your treatment plan can be seriously impacted. If you have conventional metal braces, bring any rubber bands you may need and extra wax in case a wire or bracket should break. Depending on the location of your travels, getting a toothbrush, toothpaste, or dental floss may be difficult, so we recommend being sure to pack what you need.

Wear a Mouthguard
Summer is a popular time for many sports, especially baseball, softball, and the start of football. If you wear braces, we highly recommend wearing a mouthguard. There is always a chance that you can experience an emergency. Wearing a mouthguard gives you extra protection for your teeth, gums, and lips. Even if you don’t wear braces, wearing a mouthguard is beneficial when playing sports.

Eat Cautiously
We often speak about the importance of avoiding certain foods with orthodontic hardware. We know there is a lot of temptation during the summer, especially if you are traveling. While it may be difficult, it’s important to avoid chewy, crunchy, and tough foods. We would hate for you to break a bracket or wire.

If you have any questions about your treatment plan or experience a complication with your treatment, we encourage you to contact our office, which is located in Southfield, MI to schedule an appointment. We hope you have a great start to the summer and will see you soon!
