The Second Time Around

The Second Time Around

The Second Time Around

It’s common for people to get braces at some point during their life. In some cases, after having had orthodontic treatment, however, the teeth will shift back to their original location after braces have been removed. People who have worn braces in the past can choose to straighten their teeth a second time. A second round of braces is common among adults and nothing to be ashamed or embarrassed about.

Causes of Misalignment in Adulthood:

  • Quick Treatment: Sometimes braces weren’t used for the normal two to three-year treatment period. Teeth require that time to be properly set in place.
  • Retainer Neglect: Failing to consistently use a retainer causes teeth to move back into their original positions. Retainers help stop the teeth from moving as the body ages and must be used after braces are finished.
  • Teeth Grinding: Chronic teeth grinding makes teeth loose, breakable, and easy to shift.
  • Facial Trauma: A physical assault, vehicle accident, sports injury, or accidental fall can break or dislocate the jawbone. Braces are needed to realign the mouth into its normal shape.

Why Get Braces In as an Adult?

  • Self-confidence: The greatest benefit of braces is the ability to boost a person’s self-confidence. A new smile can have a positive impact on a person’s emotional wellbeing.
  • Correct or straighten shifting teeth: Braces will fix any crooked or unevenly spaced teeth, making speech, breathing, and eating easier.
  • Better Oral Health: Straight teeth are easier to brush and floss. Crooked teeth make it harder to remove harmful bacteria and reach tight crevices in the mouth.
  • Pain Relief: Jaw discomfort and pain are reduced through braces, creating better oral health.
  • Variety of Options: Traditional metal braces are no longer the only option for straightening teeth. Patients can choose from ceramic, lingual, and Invisalign® braces.
