How To Care For Your Teeth With Braces

When our patients first get their braces or other hardware, we go over very specific instructions on how to clean the teeth and foods that should generally be avoided. Not only do we review these topics because we want to prevent your braces from breaking, but we also want to help prevent decay and other oral health problems from developing while you are wearing braces. Read on to learn more about how braces can lead to problems with decay.

Braces and Tooth Decay

Braces themselves cannot cause tooth decay, but when you are not caring for your teeth properly while wearing braces, the likelihood of experiencing decay and other complications increases. It is very easy for food particles to become trapped between the brackets and wires if you are wearing traditional metal braces. Be sure to visit your orthodontist if you experience tooth discomfort not related to having your braces adjusted or tooth sensitivity or you notice discoloration or small holes in your teeth.

Ways to Help Your Oral Health

It is extremely important to follow our directions on how to clean your teeth properly and the foods that you should not eat while wearing braces. Be sure that you brush your teeth after each meal. We recommend carrying a small travel toothbrush that you can use while you are out and about, at school, or at work. Aside from brushing, it is important to use dental floss regularly as well. If you have any questions about how to properly clean your teeth, braces, or other hardware, we are more than happy to help.

Be sure to keep scheduling oral hygiene examinations with your orthodontist every six months. These visits are in addition to your visits for maintenance in our office. Just a reminder: we are here to improve the alignment of your teeth; we cannot treat any decay or other problems in your mouth.

If you have questions about your orthodontic treatment or think you may be experiencing a problem, be sure to contact our office, which is located in Southfield, MI, to schedule an appointment. We look forward to seeing you on your next visit.
