How Do Braces Work?

Braces and orthodontic hardware may seem like a more recent invention, although the first modern braces can be traced back to the 1800s. Traditional metal braces became even more popular over the past few decades. The braces that we use today are not the same as the ones your parents and grandparents had. Dental treatment and technology are constantly changing to bring patients the best care.

How Do Braces Work?

All patients are different, and they come to us with a variety of issues and needs for care. At The Best Braces, we develop a treatment plan for patients that is unique and custom designed based on the state of a patient’s oral health and the placement of teeth and jawbone. Some patients require movement of the jaw and dental arch to create more room for the teeth. Others may be dealing with crooked teeth that need to be straightened. Others may have worn braces previously, but their teeth have shifted, and they require additional treatment.

Traditional metal braces are a fixed appliance that cannot be removed from the mouth. The teeth are typically covered by a metal bracket or band with a metal wire. The teeth are moved when the wire applies pressure to the teeth. The pressure is what causes discomfort after you visit our office for an adjustment. Moving the teeth is a slow process that can take many months.

Clear aligners work in much the same way, but instead of using brackets and wires to move the teeth, the teeth are moved by a series of aligner trays. Another difference with clear aligners is that they can be removed from the mouth. Whereas traditional metal braces are always moving the teeth, aligners only work when they are in the mouth.
