Help Avoid Costly Treatments By Choosing Early Orthodontic Care
Were you surprised to learn that your young child was recommended to be seen by an orthodontist during their last hygiene examination? Many years ago, it was commonplace not to visit the orthodontist until your teen years. Many still have this same notion today due to life experience and the depiction of braces-wearing teens on television and movies. Today, our suggestion is for children to visit our office around the age of seven. During your child’s first visit, we are able to determine if treatment should be started.
Why Start Treatment At a Young Age?
Many years ago, it was recommended to start orthodontic treatment after the baby teeth were lost and the adult teeth emerged. We now take a different approach and find that it is more beneficial to the patient, the treatment results, and the strain on your wallet if treatment is started at an early age and broken into treatment phases. When patients are seen at an early age, we are able to view the bite, placement and width of the jaw, and the growth of the teeth. We believe in treating any structural and potential issues during the growth phase while the jaw is easier to move. Some young patients do not need any early treatment, while others may need a device such as a palate expander. Once growth stops and the jawbones are fused into place, it can make treatment more difficult. The type of treatment we recommend could be much more involved and not only add more time to the overall treatment, but greatly increase the cost of treatment as well.
Two Phase Treatment
When we see young children, it does not mean that they will be receiving orthodontic care and treatment for years on end. If an issue is detected while the child is younger, that concern is resolved through treatment during phase one. When the treatment is complete, the child is monitored until the adult teeth emerge. We revisit the placement of the teeth and determine if the next phase of treatment is needed. There are some patients who do not need treatment for many years between the two phases.
