Technology in braces has progressed over the years in a positive way, and today there are several options available. The type of braces we choose in your treatment always revolves around your needs and wishes and the ability of the particular braces to deliver the desired results. Each type of braces has unique features and can be a better choice depending on the job to be done.
Metal braces — Still number one, metal braces remain the type used most often in orthodontics. The brackets are now much smaller and less obvious than in years gone by, and they can be the least expensive choice. Adjustments are made by tightening or loosening the archwires that link the brackets and positioning tiny elastics that connect the archwires to the brackets. We have more control when making adjustments, and metal braces can be the best choice for patients with extremely crooked teeth and bite problems.
Ceramic braces — The wires and brackets in ceramic braces are tooth colored, so they blend in with your teeth. Many patients enjoy that esthetic improvement, and the braces are almost as effective as their metal counterparts.
Clear braces — Clear braces are virtually invisible clear aligners that gradually move your teeth into place. They do not use wires or brackets, so your smile will not reveal your treatment. The aligners are removable for eating and cleaning, so you won’t have the same food restrictions that apply to metal and ceramic braces. With clear aligners, you will return to our office every six to eight weeks to receive new aligners, and the length of treatment will depend upon your specific orthodontic needs.
Invisalign® braces — Invisalign® uses clear, plastic trays resembling a mouthguard to gradually coax the teeth into place. They are usually worn for 22 hours daily — and they can be removed when eating and for cleaning. New trays are made every two weeks to continue the gradual movement of the teeth into their new positions. This type of braces is not the most suitable for treating severe problems. Invisalign® is available for adults and teenagers only.
