We want to share some things to avoid to ensure that your braces don’t keep you from experiencing everything this summer has to offer. Read on to learn more about what to avoid while wearing braces.
Things to Avoid This Summer With Braces
Summer is an exciting time full of amazing opportunities. We would hate for you to experience an orthodontic emergency because you made a mistake with your braces. We want to share some things you should avoid to ensure you can continue to enjoy your summer worry free:
Don’t Bite Into Hard Foods
This is the time of year to enjoy foods such as corn on the cob. Unfortunately, biting into this summer favorite is a guaranteed way to break your brackets and wires. You can still eat this common summer food by cutting the kernels off the cob.
Avoid Chewy, Sticky, and Sugary Food
Chewy and sticky foods are another way to break your orthodontic hardware. Sugary foods can also remain trapped between the teeth and around your brackets. While you might not experience an issue now, this can cause severe oral health complications when your braces are removed.
Clean Your Teeth
When you are enjoying yourself it can be tempting to avoid cleaning your teeth. No matter how much fun you are having, be sure to take a few minutes to brush and clean your teeth properly after mealtimes.
Wear a Mouthguard
If you play any summer sports, be sure to wear a mouthguard to protect your teeth and braces. Even if you are playing a casual game with friends, it is still easy to become injured.
We know that it can be a bummer to avoid doing things you may typically enjoy while wearing braces. It’s important to remember that these changes are only temporary while wearing your braces or orthodontic hardware, and you will be able to resume these activities again soon. If you should happen to experience an emergency this summer, be sure to contact our office located in Southfield, MI and we can help. We hope you have a safe and enjoyable rest of summer!
