Pregnancy And Orthodontics
At The Best Braces, we are happy to treat patients from childhood up through adulthood. Now that we see more adults than ever, we are often asked if orthodontic treatment can continue during pregnancy. There is no need to worry. It is perfectly safe for you to receive orthodontic treatment while you are pregnant. It may be the perfect time because you can get all of your appointments in before you have a brand new baby to bring along with you. Sometimes, new mothers can find it difficult to commit to appointments, and failure to stay on schedule can affect your treatment plan.
During pregnancy, some women may experience an increase in tooth movement due to the bones and ligaments in the body preparing for childbirth. It can be easier for the orthodontic hardware to move the teeth into the desired placement.
Be Sure to Thoroughly Clean Your Teeth
During pregnancy, women have an increased risk of developing gum disease due to the added hormones in the body. We encourage our pregnant patients to really be diligent with cleaning and caring for their teeth and gums. Be sure that you are brushing after each meal and using the necessary tools to clean between the teeth and around any brackets and hardware that is in your mouth. It is also important that you continue to visit your dentist for oral hygiene examination appointments. Your dentist will want to monitor your oral health closely, especially if you are wearing braces.
Morning Sickness
If you are in your first trimester and dealing with nausea or sickness, we completely understand. Be sure to contact our office to explain the situation, and we can schedule your next appointment or adjustment accordingly. If you are vomiting, be sure that you are brushing and cleaning your teeth. The acid can destroy hardware and tooth enamel.
If you are pregnant or looking to become pregnant and have any questions regarding your orthodontic care, contact our office, which is located in Southfield, MI. We look forward to hearing from you soon and wish you the best of luck on your new journey!
