Are you wondering if you are going to be able to enjoy Halloween while wearing braces? We are happy to tell you that of course you can enjoy the holiday; however, your indulgences may need to look a little different than in previous years. Being that Halloween is centered around sugary treats, it is important to be mindful of your choices while wearing braces. It is even possible to incorporate your braces into your Halloween fun. We want to offer a friendly reminder of treats that are safe to choose and those that should be left behind. Read on to see if your favorite treats made the list and how your braces can play a fun role in your celebrations!
Use Braces to Your Advantage this Halloween
Braces don’t have to be the buzzkill of your holiday festivities. There are many ways that you can incorporate your braces into your Halloween fun. One of the easiest is to choose elastic ligatures of your favorite Halloween colors to be placed around your brackets. Another is to choose a costume that would use your braces as a fun addition.
Treats to Choose and Avoid
The number one rule is to avoid any candy that is sticky or chewy. We recommend avoiding:
- Taffy
- Caramel
- Hard candy
- Popcorn
- Chewing gum
It is best to choose treats that dissolve easily and cannot become trapped in your hardware. We recommend:
- Chocolate
- Peanut butter treats
- Cookies
- Cakes and cupcakes
- Ice cream
We know that it can be tempting to indulge on Halloween, but we would hate for you to experience an emergency with your oral hardware. Just as a reminder: be sure to contact us as soon as possible if anything breaks or doesn’t feel correct in the mouth. Be sure to brush and floss properly to ensure that no sugar is left behind. Pay careful attention to the brackets, between the wires, and around the gumline. If cleaning the teeth is not possible after eating treats, try to drink as much water as possible until you are able to brush.
We hope that you have a Halloween full of fun! As always if you experience an emergency or have any questions about treats that are safe to enjoy, don’t hesitate to reach out to our office located in Southfield, MI. See you at your next appointment!
