Braces & Sport: Do They Mix?
One of the most common questions we get from patients and their parents is about restrictions when wearing traditional metal braces. Two of the most common concerns are about food restrictions and if there are any restrictions or limitations in playing sports or any physical activity. We have often spoken about the various food restrictions and would be happy to answer any questions you may have if you contact the office. Today, we are going to discuss physical activity while wearing braces or receiving orthodontic treatment. Read on to learn more.
Playing Sports or a Physical Activity While Wearing Braces
With the arrival of spring a few days ago, spring sports are back up and running. Many of our patients who wear traditional metal braces play a variety of sports. One of the main concerns is if there are any restrictions while playing. While we have no restrictions per se, we do highly recommend that any patient receiving orthodontic treatment wear a mouthguard while playing any sport. This includes contact and non-contact sports.
There is always the possibility that players can get hit in the face with a ball, collide with another player, or trip and fall on their face and the resulting damage can be severe and lead to serious discomfort, not to mention an added expense. If you have any questions about a mouthguard, we are more than happy to help.
