When you hear the same information often enough, it’s easy to accept it as truth — even when it’s not. Many myths circulate about orthodontic treatment. The team at The Best Braces wants to dispel some of these myths. We realize the misinformation may prevent patients from seeking treatment. For patients with orthodontic issues, seeking treatment not only gives them an awesome smile but can improve oral health and overall health.
Myth #1: Orthodontic treatment is unaffordable.
Fact: Don’t let the cost of orthodontic care keep you from getting treatment. Some dental insurances cover a portion of the fees, and we offer flexible payment options.
Myth #2: Everyone who offers braces and aligners is an orthodontist.
Fact: Some general dentists offer braces or aligners, and companies are selling do-it-yourself aligners. Orthodontists and general dentists have the same initial training, but we complete several more years of advanced training to specialize as orthodontists.
Myth #3: Orthodontic treatment is only cosmetic.
Fact: Completing orthodontic treatment enhances your appearance and boosts confidence. But crooked teeth are hard to clean, which makes you susceptible to tooth decay and gum disease. Correcting alignment issues improves the function of your teeth and jaw. Also, treatment promotes proper chewing function, better digestion, clearer speech, and good oral hygiene.
Myth #4: You can’t eat your favorite foods.
Fact: Wearing braces requires you to give up hard or sticky foods and popcorn to avoid damaging your braces. Limit beverages like wine and sodas as well due to potential staining of brackets and bands. If you wear aligners, they’re removable, so you can eat with no restrictions.
Myth #5: Orthodontic treatment results are permanent.
Fact: When you complete treatment, you must wear a retainer to maintain your results. There are several types of retainers. We’ll determine which one is best for you.
